Not bad. Especially considering that I had such high hopes for it. Somehow, the chemistry that was there in Speed had waned a bit but by the end of the movie, it all came flooding back and I walked out of the theater satisfied and emotionally lifted.
It took a while to win me over, but it did. I was pleasantly surprised to see Tevin Campbell on Broadway and he was amazing. I guess I'm used to the Hollywood-type of musical so I was taken aback when I saw the set, costumes, and noticed how the story was being played out. It was enjoyable once I corrected my initial expectations and the finale really ended the show with a bang. Overall, I'm glad I saw it but I doubt that I'll be running back for seconds.
We waited by the stage door afterwards and I got to take a picture with Tevin. I was a bit starstruck being that I practically memorized his I'm Ready album as I listened to it every day for months in my early teens. Between that and janet., I spent most of 1993 contemplating and analyzing the art of R&B as presented by those two pros. It was a milestone year for me in my study of music and I got to meet one of the people responsible for it. Pretty cool.
Witty, funny, paced well and perfectly cast--but no emotional payoff. Call me old-fashioned, but there are certain movies that just can't pull off the we-hope-you-assume-it-ends-well ending and this is one of them.
Since I'm nursing a sore throat, I opted to stay home tonight and watch the Will & Grace Series Finale on DVD. I had seen the last half when it had originally aired a few weeks ago so I already knew how it was going to end. It was definitely more realistic (as far as Will and Grace are concerned, Jack and Karen are a different story) and somehow that made it more heartwarming and resolved than the Friends series finale. The writers took a more difficult and thought-provoking angle and I appreciate them not taking the easy way out.
However, the Special Features on the DVD certainly leaves much to be desired. The "Curtain Call" and "The Final Bow Featurette" were just a lot of images with not a lot of thought behind them. The interviews segment was great and too short, if anything. It was an amazing show and I take my hat off to everyone involved. This was one of the most original, hilarious, and inspiring TV shows that I've ever seen and I know that nothing will ever take its place.
