Corteo

The first time I went to watch a Cirque du Soleil show I planned to catch the ferry up to Randall's Island and I imagined it to be a beautiful beginning to a magical night. Instead, I got out of work late, had to rush through dinner, had a hard time catching a shuttle bus to the ferry terminal, missed the last ferry, desperately hailed a cab to the shuttle bus going to Randall's Island, caught the last bus, and ended up missing the first 8 minutes of Varekai. The second time I had to go to Randall's Island, I didn't even consider the ferry and went straight for the subway only to that we were waiting 15 minutes for the express line when we really needed the local line so we jumped in a cab instead. This year, determined to conquer my fears of the ferry, I started with a day off from work and started the journey to watch Corteo about 2 1/2 hours before showtime. Of course, this was not entirely my decision as much as it was my paranoid friend's who hated to rush. We caught the first ferry and enjoyed a lovely cruise down the west side. There was enough time to stroll through the gift shop and make a visit to the loo before standing around for an hour waiting for the doors to open.

I dare say that out of all the Cirque shows that I've seen live, this is probably my second favorite (the first being Varekai). There were more aerial acts and I can't help but to imagine myself up there gliding so gracefully around the big top too. This show also had the most varied type of acts and people of all shapes and sizes doing incredible things. A feast for the eyes, one might say. If you get a chance to see Corteo, go for it.

I've re-started the chain of events that lead to the completion of my Final Master's Project at NYU. Hopefully by the end of the year I will have conquered this beast that has been hovering over me for over 2 years!

I guess I should stop procrastinating and get back to writing this sucker, huh?

The Wedding Singer - The Musical
A few weeks ago I got to work on the cast recording of the new musical, The Wedding Singer (yes, it's based on the Adam Sandler/Drew Barrymore movie). Right off the bat, I loved the songs that I heard and thought that the cast was pretty talented. Since then, I've been bombarded with the TV commercials where they included video clips of the show performance and got even more eager to see it. Yet, I was still put off by the thought of parting with $100 in my current financial state. I guess it doesn't help that I recently ordered tickets for Corteo and Delerium which put me in the hole for...well, use your imagination. When I heard about the Tony nominations that the show garnered, that lit a fire under me to catch it before the tourists and wannabe trendy New Yorkers flocked to it. I found information online about the student tickets that they offered the day of the show for $26 and the next morning I scored myself a pair.

It turns out that it was the best $26 that I've spent in a long time. The energy, the spirit, and the excitement from the cast was contagious. The two leads had an amazing chemistry that had me completely invested in their romance. The rest of the cast was spectacular and I would find it hard to believe that a better collection of actresses and actors could exist for this show.

If you have a valid student ID, you can present it at the box office for up to 2 tickets in the first two rows on the day of the show. It's one of the best deals in town. Can't wait until the soundtrack comes out next month!
