I get to work a little bit this week. The night that I found out I got this gig, I dreamt about the setup. It was exactly like how they film Everyday Italian on the Food Network as if it was a movie. There were closeup shots of my hands raising mic stands, slowly wrapping cables over booms, carefully putting bantom cables in the patchbay, and of course the clicking sound from the quick clips were clear as day. I want to work so badly that even in my dreams I'm obsessing about it. I don't like things this way, not at all.

"If you can dream it, you can do it." - Venus and Serena Williams

"If you can dream it, know what you have to put in it, know what you have to sacrifice, and be willing to do all that no matter what, then you can do it." - World-Weary and Cynical Me

"...life is many things at once." - Meryl Streep and Lily Tomlin during the 2006 Oscars.

Overall, I'd say that the few nominees that I was cheering for received the little statuettes: Rachel Weisz (it's a recent revelation that she does the kind of films that make me want to do more and be more), Brokeback Mountain, Memoirs of a Geisha, and Crash.

Pig in Singapore

I don't think I felt hunger once during my trip back home this year. I disgust myself just thinking about that and then I remember all the good food I had and quickly forgive my behavior. The best of the best:
  • Soup Restaurant - Their Beggar's Tofu almost tastes like potato chips. I can't think of any other taste that's close to it. So yummy.

  • nydc - The Farmboy Chicken Salad never fails. Never. I've once lovingly described the tender meat as someone sitting there and actually pulling the flesh from the chickens' carcass instead of some vacuum-packed-diced-chicken-breast-crap.

  • Jumbo Seafood - The quality of the crabs were superb. Good cereal prawns too. The chili crabs were almost too spicy for everyone else and I can't believe I finished my piece!

  • No Signboard Seafood - Speaking of cereal prawns, the ones here are the absolute best that I've ever tasted (sorry Mom, Mai Chien, and Mai Nam). I would gladly suffer a sore throat if it meant that I could savor a platter full of the crispy bits. We were eating with some good friends and I seriously considered putting aside all notions of proper dining etiquette and hogging the entire thing. I had to keep reminding myself that I care enough about these people to want to share the goodness because this pure sensation of enlightenment should be celebrated with special friends and family.

  • Joaquim Buffet Restaurant - One of the rare occasions where you can get quality and quantity. Good variety of Singaporean home-cooking that brought me back to my days in Ang Mo Kio.

  • Marmalade Pantry - I was told to have the linguini with crabmeat, tomatoes, and pinenuts. And boy am I glad I did. I would have picked up the plate and licked it clean if it hadn't been such a classy joint. This was also where I got my first taste of banoffee pie which I've been curious about ever since I heard about it in Love Actually. I wasn't too crazy about it only because I don't like a strong dairy taste and they made theirs with freshly whipped heavy cream.
The only place that I missed that was on my list was Bakerzin, if only for their Warm Chocolate Cake. Anyway, my pants were getting seriously snug by the time I thought about it so I decided to just let that one go. I'll hit it next year along with my new discovery: Makansutra Gluttons Bay!

Of course I spent my fair share of time feasting on the good 'ol classics like hawker centers, Ya Kun Kaya, BreadTalk, Sakae Sushi, and found a new favorite way to combine caffeine and bread, Rotiboy.

See, this is one of the reasons why I shouldn't live in Singapore. I'd be at least twice my size with some serious health problems!
