It's been a while since I saw a film that blew me away just with its incredible script, actors, cinematography and soundtrack. My interest in Monster's Ball grew out of my admiration for Halle Berry's talent as an actress. Being that this was the film that she won an Oscar for (the first Best Actress award that went to an actress of color), I jumped at the chance to watch it the second it hit DVD since I didn't get to watch in the theaters. The powerful overtones of the movie brought out a few interesting racial, social, and psychological issues that I haven't yet seen addressed in other films. The soundtrack was often bare, but enough to express and set the atmosphere. If you haven't seen it yet, I wholeheartedly recommend it. Warning: Monster's Ball is not for the queasy ones out there (you know who you are).
Speaking of Halle Berry, the last movie that she starred in that I've seen prior to Monster's Ball was Swordfish, which was directed by Dominic Sena who also did Gone In Sixty Seconds. Before he started calling the shots in these flashy Hollywood movies, he was best known as the director of Janet's videos during the Rhythm Nation era. The pinnacle of his career, in my opinion, was when he reunited with J to direct one of her best videos to date, "If".
Now, who rules Six Degrees of Janet?
